VAT Calculator — Add or Remove VAT (UK 20%, 5% or Any Rate)

Add VAT to a net amount, or strip the VAT out of a gross, VAT-inclusive total — a reverse (backwards) VAT calculation — at the UK 20% or 5% rate, or any rate you enter. Instant, no signup.

VAT (value-added tax) works in two directions, and getting them mixed up leads to under- or over-charging. Sometimes you have a net (VAT-exclusive) price and need to add VAT to reach the price the customer pays. Other times you have a gross (VAT-inclusive) total on a receipt or invoice and need to work out how much of it was VAT — for your bookkeeping or your VAT return. This calculator does both.

To add VAT, choose “Add VAT,” enter the net amount and the VAT rate, and it shows the VAT and the gross total. To remove VAT, choose “Remove VAT,” enter the gross amount and rate, and it splits it back into net and VAT. Enter any rate that applies to you — for example 20% (UK standard), 5% (UK reduced) or 23% (Ireland standard). Results update as you type, with nothing to submit and no signup.

The math: to add VAT, gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100). To remove it from a VAT-inclusive total, net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), and VAT = gross − net. Knowing the reverse calculation matters whenever a total is quoted VAT-inclusive and you need the tax portion for filing.

StandupCRM applies the correct tax on every sale and keeps the records you need at filing time — this free calculator is the quick check for a one-off amount.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by the VAT rate and add it. This tool does it — enter the net amount and rate in “Add VAT” mode.

How do I remove VAT from a total?

Divide the gross by (1 + rate/100) to get the net, then subtract for the VAT. Use “Remove VAT” mode.

What’s the difference from sales tax?

They’re calculated the same way here; VAT is the common term outside the US, sales tax within it.

How do I calculate VAT backwards from a gross total?

Divide the VAT-inclusive total by 1.20 (for 20% VAT) to get the net, then subtract the net from the total to find the VAT. “Remove VAT” mode above does this reverse calculation instantly.

Is it free?
